Swamp and Plantation in One Day from New Orleans: Is the Combo Worth It?
4 min read
The answer first
A combination day gets you a swamp and Oak Alley without arranging two transfers, and both offers below include hotel pickup. The Bayou Swamp Tour and Oak Alley Plantation Tour takes 7.5 hours and uses a covered boat in the Manchac Swamp: €112.14 per person, 4.6 / 5 from 1,221 reviews. The Oak Alley Plantation & Airboat Swamp Combo Tour takes 8.5 hours and ends with an airboat: €143.54 per person, 4.8 / 5 from 1,073 reviews. The day is long, so it suits people who want both and can walk and sit for hours.
The two combos side by side
| Tour | What the booking page says | Length | Price | Rating |

How the Manchac day runs
The Manchac combo gives a timetable. Pickup is in a 30-minute window starting at 10:30 AM, the swamp tour is at 12:00 PM and lasts until about 1:40 PM, and the bus leaves for the plantation by 2:00 PM. Oak Alley’s tour time is about 3:00 PM and is set by the plantation, followed by roughly 30 minutes of free time. The return bus leaves between 4:30 PM and 4:45 PM. The page calls these times approximate, since traffic and weather can move them. The page recommends a hearty breakfast and a bagged lunch or snack, says snacks and drinks are sold at the swamp’s gift shop and says no eating or drinking is allowed in the shuttle.
How the airboat day differs
On the airboat combo the plantation comes first. The page describes a guided tour by guides in period dress and a walk among the 28 oaks, with a snack in the restaurant at your own expense. Then comes the airboat in an open boat: children must be 48 inches (about 122 cm) tall to sit and wear a seat belt, and hearing protection is provided. Pick the airboat if speed and open air matter to you, and the covered boat if you want a slower ride with a roof over you. Our guide to airboat or pontoon swamp tours explains the difference.
The plantation side
Oak Alley’s own site says guided Big House tours run daily from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, tour times are assigned when you buy tickets, and the site is closed on New Year’s Day, Mardi Gras, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. It suggests allowing a minimum of 2 hours. For how Oak Alley compares with Whitney, read Oak Alley or Whitney Plantation, or browse all plantation tours.
Our recommendation
For most visitors with one day, the 7.5-hour Manchac combo is the easier pick: it is shorter, it publishes its timetable and its boat has a roof. Take the airboat combo if the airboat is the part you came for. Split the two if you would rather keep a day lighter, or if someone in your group is listed as not suitable for one tour; to drive yourself, compare rental cars for New Orleans. Cancellation differs: the Manchac combo allows free cancellation up to 2 days ahead, the airboat combo up to 24 hours.
